I started with Autodesk 123D because it was free and simple to learn. It is now so mathematically complex that it keeps freezing the computer with each new step. Ive had to make it at 10x scale because the program was hard to work with at normal scale.

One of the biggest differences between most 3D modelling software programs and Autodesk 123D Design, is that the latter allows you to create a certain object pretty quickly, as the program offers you a lot of quick options such as already made shapes (primitives) to which you can add certain details. I engage with local schools and colleges to promote my subject area.Autodesk 123D Design is a powerful, but easy to use software application that enables people to create detailed 2D and 3D models. I work closely with technicians and students: I believe that academics, technicians and students are all colleagues working towards a common goal. I have partnerships with industry to ensure my teaching is informed by and engages with the real world. I am a senior lecturer in Engineering and Product Design at the University of Brighton. In particular I generate parametric, algorithm and analysis driven forms and structures for various sport, medical, product and engineering design applications. My name is Dr Derek (Des) Covill and I use advanced computer aided engineering design and 3D printing technologies to experiment with new design, analysis and manufacturing technologies.
Any other interesting applications worth testing? All done within minutes (or at least a few hours – but not days!!). We’re experimenting with this to make figurines of ourselves (a vanity project sure, but it’s fun!), and to make 3D virtual reality models from objects that have been captured using a thermal imaging camera to give a 3D thermal map of the object. The photogrammetry app (catch) is also a fantastic tool for reverse engineering existing geometry. This allows for really quick prototypes to be made to test functionality, scale, usability. Here’s an image of Evan Mackrill’s hockey sticks that have been prototyped using the Make app which allows CAD or scan data in this case (using the Faro arm) to be segmented into easily assemblable (they even number the jigsaw for you!) laser cut slices.
These are seriously great for prototyping and for photogrammetry (capturing 3D geometry from a range of photographs of an object). We’ve recently been experimenting with the 123D design, make and create apps/programs from Autodesk ( ).
